I saw that SNL sketch when it was first on.
The Letterman stuff is great! ![]() -------------------- "I feel like the mere existence of They Might Be Giants in the world of commercial music is an untenable, unworkable idea."

![]() I hear he's been known to put his foot in his mouth sometimes, but that was some really funny stuff (especially the Giuliani comment). -------------------- "I feel like the mere existence of They Might Be Giants in the world of commercial music is an untenable, unworkable idea."

"At a rally today in Virginia, they played the theme to 'Rocky' as John McCain walked on to the stage. Does John McCain seem like Rocky to you? Doesn't he seem more like Burgess Meredith's character?" - Jay Leno, NBC's "Tonight" show.
--- "Why would McCain want to be like Rocky? Did you see the movie? Didn't Rocky get the hell kicked out of him by the black guy?" - Leno. --- "You heard what happened at a rally yesterday. Sarah Palin mistook some of her supporters for hecklers. And, you know, confusion happens in all walks of life. For example, a few weeks ago, John McCain mistook her for a legitimate candidate." - David Letterman, CBS'"Late Show." --- "In an interview, the boyfriend of Sarah Palin's pregnant daughter says that at first he was nervous attending the Republican convention with the Palins, but then he was like, whatever. He also admitted that he writes Sarah Palin's speeches." - Conan O'Brien, NBC's "Late Night." --- "Critics are wondering, what happened to the old John McCain. Wait a minute. There's an older John McCain?" - Stephen Colbert, Comedy's Central's "The Colbert Report." --- "Barack Obama says that both men and women should have to register for the draft. The first woman he wants signed up: Sarah Palin." - Leno. --- Letterman's top 10 list was "Ways John McCain can turn it around." No. 8: "Change name to Jorack McBama." No. 1: "Get Sarah Palin to illegally fire herself." --- "They weren't booing Sarah Palin at that hockey game. The crowd was just getting into the Halloween spirit." - Colbert. --- "The last presidential debate is tomorrow night, and the debate is going to be sponsored in part by Anheuser-Busch. I guess they figured the first two debates were so boring, people need to get good and liquored up first." - Leno. --- "John McCain is going to take this opportunity to unveil his new campaign persona, his new campaign personality, to really energize the last couple of weeks of the campaign - fighting underdog. Fighting underdog. That's John McCain and the campaign. And if that doesn't work, he's going to go to sadistic yard bull. And if that doesn't work, then he's going to go to corrupt bordertown sheriff. And if that doesn't work, seen-it-all bartender..." - Letterman. --- -------------------- ![]() |

Thursday's late-night TV wrap-up
Oct 17, 4:54 AM (ET) LOS ANGELES (AP) - Late-night TV show hosts found humor in the presidential campaign. A sampling from Thursday night: --- "If you watched the debate last night, you know John McCain kept talking about this guy Sen. Obama met on the campaign trail named Joe the Plumber. You know the saddest part of the Joe the Plumber story? Last month he was an investment banker." - Jay Leno, NBC's "Tonight Show." --- "Sixty-seven percent of Americans say they've seen enough and they don't want any more presidential debates. The other 33 percent are plumbers who want to hear their name on television." - Conan O'Brien, NBC's "Late Night." --- "With just 19 days left until the election, Barack Obama warned supporters today to guard against overconfidence. Then he boarded Air Force One, blasted 'We Are The Champions' and shouted 'I'm King of the World.'" - Amy Poehler, NBC's "Saturday Night Live Weekend Update Thursday." --- "It was interesting last night during the debate. At one point, John McCain brought up Barack Obama's relationship with '60s radical William Ayers. And then Barack Obama brings up McCain's relationship with John Brown at Harper's Ferry." - David Letterman, CBS'"Late Show." --- "This Joe the Plumber is all over the place. He's been on 'Good Morning America,' Fox News. He was talking to The Associated Press. This plumber's done more interviews today than Sarah Palin has done since being chosen by John McCain." - Leno. --- "It was a different John McCain, wasn't it? He was electric. He electrified the crowd. And afterwards, Cloris Leachman tossed him her hotel key." - Letterman. --- "Barack Obama has begun running ads within video games. Obama ads can be seen in video games such as 'Madden NFL '09' and 'Burnout.' Not to be outdone, John McCain has begun putting ads inside many MRI machines." - Seth Meyers, "Saturday Night Live Weekend Update Thursday." --- "He (McCain) does a lot of weird stuff with his face. For one thing, he blinks like he's sending Morse code signals through the TV set. ... It's almost as if he's saying, 'Is that a black guy beating me? I can't believe my eyes.'" - Jimmy Kimmel, ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" --- "During last night's debate, Hillary Clinton watched from the audience of Hofstra University's auditorium. Bill Clinton was also at Hofstra University but he watched from the Delta Gamma Sorority House." - O'Brien. --- Top 10 Messages Left on Joe the Plumber's Answering Machine: "1. It's Madonna. Are you seeing anybody?" - Letterman. -------------------- ![]() |

![]() I got to see McCain on Letterman last night -- it was nice to see him just a little bit humbled and self-deprecating. -------------------- "I feel like the mere existence of They Might Be Giants in the world of commercial music is an untenable, unworkable idea."

Dave had him sweating bullets.
i wish actual reporters would ask real questions like that. it's odd that it takes a comedian to ask the questions the news media should really be asking. ![]() ever notice how McCain never finishes a sentence before he starts another one when he doesn't have a script? ![]() ever notice how scripted he sounds, in general? i guess they all do that though. they all have their talking points. i'd like to see him get Sarah Palin on there. -------------------- ![]() |

I guess it's because the best comedians tend to be irreverent, questioning the status quo and addressing its absurdity, while the people in the news media (journalists, reporters, etc.) tend to worry more about respectability and not taking risks or getting on anyone's bad side. (Which is ironic because, by not being more challenging and probing, the news media do no favors to the readers and viewers they're supposed to be keeping as informed as possible!)
Exactly. It would be nice to hear the candidates' viewpoints on a wide array of issues rather than the same few issues over and over again. McCain sounds especially repetitive, though, while Obama seems to be better at tailoring his answers to specific situations.
Now THAT would've been a scream! ![]() -------------------- "I feel like the mere existence of They Might Be Giants in the world of commercial music is an untenable, unworkable idea."
