my baby.
anyhoo, i think i'm gonna use this thread as my "Nathan's European Trip Blog", so i'm gonna post it in here.
I'm glad he got there safe, and I'm glad that he's keeping in touch.

he's been doing a lot of sightseeing, so he's pretty exhausted. i think he leaves for the University in Graz on like Monday.
it's all free, except for incidentals, & the 2 weeks he's gonna stay after it's over to travel around Europe. they already bought him his plane ticket home. just the airfare alone is in the thousand$.

| The University of Graz (German, Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz), a university located in Graz, Austria, is the second-largest university in Austria. Karl-Franzens-Universität, also referred to as the University of Graz, is the city's oldest university, founded in 1585 by Archduke Charles II of Austria. For most of its existence it was controlled by the Catholic church, and was closed in 1782 by Emperor Joseph II in an attempt to gain state control over educational institutions. Joseph II transformed it into a lyceum where civil servants and medical personnel were trained. In 1827 it was re-instituted as a university by Emperor Francis I, thus gaining the name Karl-Franzens-Universität, meaning Charles Francis University. Over 22,000 students are currently enrolled at this university. |

i have no idea.

| Im finally in Graz. It is way more beautiful than Vienna, which is kind of a surprise to me. Its all trees and hills and narrow streets. The house Im living in is like 350 zears old and kind of amazing. It has a pool and a decent back yard, and is up on a hill outside of town, so that at night I can look over the whole thing and it´s prettz spectacular. Houses in Austria have these tall windows with no screens, and at night you open them up because there is not air conditioning. My host family is really nice, and the Frau is quite a good cook. Still, it doesn´t quite feel like home. Well, it does and doesn´t. The main problem is that I cannot speak German AT ALL. Lots of smiling and shrugging, that kind of thing. But they are accomodating, patient and nice people. |

i didn't figure mean people would volunteer to take in exchange students, but you never know.
i'm not sure how he feels about those bands. he is going to see My Bloody Valentine in Norway though.
he's doing real good. he went to this place called Stephansdom Wien when he was still in Vienna. (St. Stephen's Cathedral in English) it's really beautiful. he went inside, but skipped the catacombs, cuz it cost money to go in there.
do tell.
well, his host family is real nice, thank goodness!

| The snails here are HUGE and AMAZING. Probably like eight or nine inches long, with huge beautiful shells. I had no idea! It´s pretty great. I haven´t seen any slugs yet, but I have high hopes for them after the snails. |
it's funny the things you notice when you're far from home.
I had no idea he was doing this, aunti biff. How freakin' cool!

glad to hear he made it there safe!
he'll get the hang of speaking German, after all, the best way to learn a foreign language is to completely immerse yourself in their culture
@ the snail thing
yeah, i asked him if he was talkin about live snails, or ones he saw on a plate.

one of his friends is going through Dew withdrawals.
poor kid.
for you!

| Austria is just like America, except everything is a different size. Snails are huge, mosquitos are tiny, you can get an order of 20 chicken mcnuggets, you can get cars that are like seven feet long...the list goes on. It's kind of surreal seeing everything you know just slightly altered. |
his German is improving. he still understands it better than he speaks it though.
| QUOTE |
| BTW, the Ice Cream here is AMAZING. It is all creamy and perfect, and they have lemon and hazelnut and all kinds of cool flavors. And a scoop is always like a € or less. I might knock my budget down one extra € a day, just so that I can get tons of ice cream. Also, I found a place to get awesome lunch for 1,50€. Street food is so much more awesome than restaurants, anyway . Best restaurant name ever? : EAT Asia Food. |
so yeah, he's doing ok. his Mom, on the other hand...
i've just been a wreck over the whole thing. mostly because of his ATM card, which had to be replaced cuz he lost it right before he left & i had to mail to him. once he gets it, i will hopefully be a little less freaked out.

that oughta hold him till his card gets there.
i can't wait to call Meema today.
| QUOTE (biff @ Jul 17 2008, 09:58 AM) |
thanks GR. ![]() he's still waiting for his card... but he found 160 bux that he forgot he'd stashed in his luggage. that oughta hold him till his card gets there. |

i gotta have faith.| QUOTE |
| This weekend was awesome! I went to Venice, which is basically the most beautiful city in the world. Did you know it was made up of 118 different islands? Needless to say, there are lots of bridges everywhere. And lots of pizza and gellato, which was basically all I ate. _____________ Over here they have so many gesprittzt, i.e. carbonated, drinks. Apple gesprittzt, orange gesprittzt, orangelemon gesprittzt. And they're all delicious. I really don't understand why we don't have these in America. ______________ Overall, things are going very well here. When I got back from my trip to Italy, Graz felt like home. How neat is that? I'm finally really settled in here. |

i think they're kinda like pop, but in fruity flavors... but i'll ask him, next chance i get.
i sent him an AT&T phone card. it was a lousy deal, price wise, but to hear his actual voice was worth all the money in the world! he sounded great!
they has to stop for half an hour to try to find the body, but i guess it turned into littlebits, cuz they never found it. they had to bring a new engine & switch it, cuz the first one was all smashed up & bloody. the engineer was all covered in blood & traumatized, so he went home & another guy took over.
he said it was the strangest thing that's ever happened to him in his whole life.

here's an excerpt...| QUOTE |
| For the last three days I was pretty sick, but I seem to be almost totally better now. I had fever symptoms, mostly, but never really ran a fever itself. This morning I woke up with pretty bad chills and sweats, so I just turned off my alarm and slept as long as my body wanted to sleep. It seems to have done the trick, cuz I have felt much better today. I was 90mins late to class, but everybody knew I was sick, so I didn't get in trouble. Instead, I was greeted with enthusiasm and chocolate. I had to miss Karaoke night last night, though, which was kind of a bummer....maybe. I figured I wouldn't tell you I was sick until I was better, so you wouldn't have to worry. Plus, I have been more busy than ever the last week or so, so I haven't really had the chance to e-mail. I'm wondering if it was just exhaustion getting to me? |

| QUOTE |
| The fudge actually came the next day after my card. But still, pretty close. Did you send them the same day? That fudge seems to only get better with age. Well, to a point, and then it gets all crumbly. But I'm sure it'll stay good long enough to keep me company on various night trains across europe. Night trains are like a hotel, except you sleep sitting up (beds cost too much) and you wake up in a different country. |
his roommate Shariq loves it! i'm gonna send that kid a whole batch all for himself when they all get home, cuz he's helped Nathan out so much. he's my hero.
But I'm glad that he's doing better, and I'm glad he got your fudge.

he's planning on going to a bunch of different countries. he said he'd try to call me from each of em. i hope his phone card holds out.
oy.

what a relief!!! here's a couple of excerpts...| QUOTE |
| I couldnt get that phone card to work here, but this is what I was going to say whenever you picked up the phone: me: Ask me what I did today you: What did you do today? Me: Saw the Sistine Chapel, a 3000 year old mummy with a face and hair, and the Pantheon. You guessed it. I am in rome, at a hostel literally two minutes away from the Vatican walls! |
| QUOTE |
| It is very strange not using German. I was getting more and more comfortable. You hear German here and there in Italy, and it gets me sentimental and wanting to talk with them. I talked some Deutsch on the train here. It is even weird to call it Deutsch and not German. I am still thinking in German, a lot. |
(she's Catholic, you know)
now i can relax a little...
it was awesome. here's a screen cap...
so, did he have fun at the Van Gogh museum? I love art museums

Vy! do tell...
he said Amsterdam was the prettiest city of all of em so far though.
that must have worried you sick, I'm glad it all worked out and he's okay though!
I bet it's a goon'n
i was all crying & stuff.
i swear, it was St Jude who got him that room. we've (me & Mom) been praying to him for Nathan, cuz he's the patron saint of hopeless cases.
turns out that i had no trouble waking up, cuz i hardly fell asleep, cuz i was still all upset, & my feet were cold.
he's gonna be in Oslow for the next few days, which is nice, cuz he's really really tired. he called last night, which was nice. he mostly talked to his Dad, but i listened in. it was really good for galoot, cuz he doesn't get all the emails like i do. this has been just as hard on him as it's been on me.

Hostels rent out ordinary stuff like sheets & towels. most of em don't even have showers.
he keeps having to take sink baths.
even at a Motel6, they'll give you all the towels you want, & they put a clean sheet on your bed, & it's all included in the price.
he's happy.
(then he's gonna go home & sleep & sleep, & then he's gonna go get his job back so he can pay off Shariq)
i bet he'll be a whole different person when he gets home.
Sorry to hear that you and Nate went through all that worry! But I'm glad that things worked out.
it helps a lot to know that someone cares.
don't it just figure?
it turns out that his room had a shower!
he didn't even think to check right at first, cuz he was so used to shower free hostels. he took a nice long one & felt much better.
they're called SunO))), & he's not a big fan, but his friend Drew is so he wants to see them for him.| QUOTE |
| There is a band I wanna see, and I'm gonna try to watch them from the street outside the fence. I tried it out earlier when another band was playing, and I could see and hear fine, and nobody chased me off. They aren't a band I like thaaaat much, but Drew LOVES them, and so I figure I need to see them, for him. They are named SunnO))). They aren't just named after a kind of amplifier (Sunn), but the amplifier's LOGO. http://www.degrooviaguitars.com/pics/amps/sunn/1.jpg , though you pronounce it 'sun.' I hear they're loud. One time they played inside a dormant volcano. They're kind of silly. |

| Dr. Pepper is almost nowhere in Europe. This is only the second time I have SEEN it. Man it tastes good. There is so much I miss about America. Europe is okay, but the USA is better, I'm convinced. I miss it every day, and feel much more connected to it now than I ever have in the past. I feel much more of a National Identitiy now. I never really felt one before, but now it is very strong. Sucks I can't really watch the olympics! I wanna root for us. |
he's also planning to eat a meal at this special place...| QUOTE |
| I wanted to have lunch the same place Leopold Bloom did in Ulysses. Davy Flynn's. It's in my planner, and I'm really excited. |

i can hardly wait...

a hamburger is like 20 bux there.
it's good to hear he's having a great time over there, it's not surprising he'd be anxious to come home though
all that traveling must be taxing!| QUOTE |
| Normally, when you picture me walking around Europe, the picture should be me with my carry bag, a bag of five or six records I bought in Graz, and then a black rolley suitcase. I'm always dropping one of them at all times, or hitting a European with one. |
that's funny, I love the details in his reports
especially in a foreign country
and that's cool that he's getting a lot of sightseeing in and got to see My Bloody Valentine
I bet it'll be fun!
i know one thing he's planning is a side trip to Cork.
it'll be nice for life to get back to normal.
but it's even less than that now.

it was surreal.

i guess he's already done needing me, now that he's back in the Rock where all his friends are.
| QUOTE (Machohervey @ Jul 23 2008, 03:08 PM) |
| Are gesprittzt something like what coffee stands call "Italian sodas"? |
the whole time he was in Europe, he never saw one Dew. he saw a couple of signs for it in Ireland, but he never actually saw one.
the closest thing he found was Dr Pepper.
yeah, I couldn't live without it! at least he found some Dr. Pepper though
