Full Version: Bad movies you like.
Mister Bones
Anyone here have some guilty pleasure films that are universally panned by others?

Here's some of mine...

Toys
Dune
Flash Gordon
Neighbors
Alien Resurrection (Winona!)
Meet the Applegates
Raising Cain
Judge Dredd

There's probably others I'm forgetting at the moment.
biff
no. i only like good movies. emo-tongue3.gif

juuust kidding. i bet most people wouldn't 'get' Hedwig & The Angry Inch... emo-tmbgtalk_dunno.gif Funnyface maybe? that one's real dorky. emo-tmbgtalk_lol5.gif

i'll have to think on this one... emo-tmbgtalk_hmm.gif
GRChereck
I don't know if I like any widely-acknowledged "bad movies"... emo-tmbgtalk_hmm.gif

But there are plenty that probably didn't get a whole lot of great reviews, yet I've enjoyed them a lot:

Benny & Joon
Dumb & Dumber
Don Juan DeMarco
To Wong Foo, Thanks For Everything, Julie Newmar
Romy & Michele's High School Reunion
Austin Powers: International Man Of Mystery
The Wedding Singer
Mamma Mia!

(I'm sure there are more, but that's all I can think of for now...)

I think you may be right... I just looked it up on RottenTomatoes -- it's got an 80% positive rating. (I guess the reviews of it that I was reading when it first came out were in the minority.) emo-tmbgtalk_hmm.gif

i'm glad it got an 80%. emo-tmbgtalk_yeah.gif

i really liked The People Under The Stairs too... & i didn't expect to at all. emo-grinning-smiley-044.gif
Mister Bones
Benny & Joon is a classic. emo-tmbgtalk_yeah.gif

I seriously need to see The People Under the Stairs again. I only saw it once as a kid and all I remember is a guy running through a house in a leather suit. emo-lmao.gif
biff
i don't remember it all that well either. i just remember i liked it. emo-tmbgtalk_bigblush.gif

The Brothers Solomon

oh god that movie was funny!
one of my favorites

I also like the movie toys

the truman show got a lot of negativity for such a great movie, but I don't know if it would be considered "a bad movie"

OH Grindhouse was a movie I REALLY liked and I am shocked at how much people disliked it
I was expecting it to be a lot bigger than it was

I don't understand people
thunderbird
Dune
League of Extraordinary Gentlemen
Scanners

All I can think of at the moment.

I thought that one was brilliant, myself. emo-tmbgtalk_thumbup.gif

Another "guilty pleasure" one for me is Mouse Hunt, about these two brothers who inherit a big, old house from their dad; there's a single mouse in it that they keep trying to get rid of but that keeps outsmarting them. Some pretty over-the-top slapstick, but I love the guys who play the brothers -- Nathan Lane of The Birdcage and Brit comic Lee Evans of Funny Bones -- and Christopher Walken has a hysterical cameo as an exterminator. emo-tmbgtalk_lol2.gif

anyone for plan 9 from outer space?
biff
i've never seen that one. (i suck!) emo-tmbgtalk_bigblush.gif i wonder if it's in galoot's 50 Horror Classics collection? emo-tmbgtalk_hmm.gif
Machohervey
Attack of the Puppet People
Die! Monster Die!

One of my favorite movies, Fear and Loathing has quickly become a modern classic, but you should've seen how the critics wiped their asses with it when it was initially released back in '98. (Sheesh! Has it been ten years?) Since I wasn't internet savvy yet, I actually found out about it by hearing a critic trash it on NPR in my car. (I didn't even know who Hunter Thompson was! All I cared about was that it was a new Gilliam film, and I didn't care how "bad" it was.)

biff
wasn't Johnny Depp in that one? i saw parts of it, & thought it was pretty good. i love when Johnny plays odd characters like that. emo-tmbgtalk_yeah.gif
GRChereck
He was! emo-tmbgtalk_thumbup.gif

emo-tmbgtalk_yeah.gif It was fun to finally get to see the real deal a couple of years ago, after having seen sort of the "making of" Plan 9 in the bio-pic film Ed Wood many, many times before. ("This is it... this is the one I'll be remembered for!" -- indeed it is, Eddie.) emo-prplhappy.gif

biff
i loved Ed Wood. emo-tmbgtalk_daz.gif

Really? I had no idea that was ever considered a 'bad' movie!! Of course I was too young to see it when it came out, but I have never heard anyone speak badly of that movie. I made a thread about it on another board the other day and it got tons of love... definitely a cult classic film. Oh and one of my personal favorites too emo-tmbgtalk_yeah.gif

I'm not gonna lie, I like Waterworld. I know its stupid, but its entertaining to me! haha

I was also really entertained by You Got Served
biff
galoot has seen Waterworld at least 1000 times. seriously. he watches it every time it's on. emo-greensmile.gif

when i'm chichin through the guide on satellite & i see it on somewhere, i always chich away as fast as i can, cuz i know if he sees it's on, he's gonna have to watch it again. emo-tmbgtalk_lol2.gif
