Full Version: What music do you listen to? (as well as TMBG)
Panarchy
Hello

I was looking in my media library the other day...

And I noticed that I only have two bands in my whole database!

emo-tmbgtalk_dunno.gif

They Might Be Giants & Dead Kennedys (the entire works of both bands... well I have yet to rip Milking the Sacred Cow to my PC, but I will!).

And that's it! emo-afraid1.gif

What music do you have/listen to?

Just asking emo-tmbgtalk_dancesmiley.gif

Panarchy

PS: Will be downloading some Monty Python soon!
Machohervey
I have a top seven, and the reason for that odd number is because that happens to be how many bands are eligible to be considered my favorite. Between these, I really can't put any one above any other.

The Monkees
TMBG
The Dead Milkmen
Camper Van Beethoven
Ween
XTC
The Beatles

A short list of bands I nerd out for to a slightly less degree:
Fishbone
Zappa/Mothers
King Missile
Butthole Surfers
Blood, Sweat & Tears
Meat Puppets
Dread Zeppelin
Liam Lynch
MC 900 Ft Jesus
Warlock Pinchers

There are many other bands that I'm into, but the above are the "cream of the crop" so to speak.

Harry Chapin, though he doesn't fit in with my usual taste, is an important artist in my life mainly because my parents played his records all the time.

I should also bring up Rhino's Nuggets compilations. I'm really into these. There are four 4-disc boxed sets and two stand alone CDs at this point.

There's also a defunct local band from New York I want to mention called Bad Ass Franklin. Their Myspace is here. This band's demo got into my hands when I was in high school beacause they were a friend of a friend of a friend or something like that. I never met them or saw them play live, but the demo tape I have is one of my favorite things, and since they never recorded professionally, I'm sure it's all kosher if I share it. Fans of Zappa or Ween I think would appreciate these guys.

i'm no good at these kind of topics. emo-tmbgtalk_lol2.gif

(besides tmbg) i guess this is what i listen to the most:

ADULT.
Erasure
Frank Black/Pixies
Gary Numan
Goldfrapp
Ladytron
Marc Almond/Soft Cell
Miss Kittin
Moby
Oingo Boingo
Pet Shop Boys
Radiohead
Saint Etienne
Sarah Brightman
Soft Cell
Sparks
Weird Al Yankovic
XTC

Lord PichuPal
I've got a lot of bands I could list for my favourites, but other than the top 3 I'm not sure how it'd be sorted. 1st is TMBG, 2nd is Lemon Demon, then 3rd would be probably The Beatles. But 3rd down is all mixed up. Here's a taste of it anyway:

The Beatles
Lemon Demon
Rammstein
Weird Al
Modest Mouse
My Chemical Romance
Oomph!
Metallica
System of a Down/Serj Tankian
Bad Religion
Evanescence
Arch Enemy
Nirvana
Styx
Dethklok/Brendan Small

That's all I can think of right now, but no particular order which I like best.
arachnid_flame
I have a TON more TMBG than anything else (they're my all time fave emo-tmbgtalk_daz.gif ) but I listen to a lot of this (in alphabetical order...really!):

Aerosmith
Bob Dylan
Buddy Holly
Frank Zappa/The Mothers
Johnny Cash
Kate Bush
Lemon Demon
Oppenheimer
Pixies
Rush
The Beatles
The Cars
The Flaming Lips
The Ramones
The Sex Pistols
Weird Al
XTC

okay, I'm sure I'm forgetting someone REALLY important though emo-tmbgtalk_lol2.gif I may be back later to edit this once I can remember...
GRChereck
You've got a lot of good ones, flame! emo-tmbgtalk_thumbup.gif

Hmm, that reminds me.

My anwhere.fm account still has Weird Al... and he is the only band who I've seen live (well not the only band, but the only one that I bought the tickets for and went out of my way to see, I've been to others with my parents... if that counts)

He is great, though I want a new album emo-tmbgtalk_nailbiter.gif

Thanks for all the other replies guys, really interestin'! emo-tmbgtalk_naughty2.gif

emo-tmbgtalk_yeah.gif Yep.

Lord PichuPal
I love Weird Al, he's an amazing musician. I've seen him live twice in my life, and the 1st show was for his Bad Hair Day album. He's hilarious in concert and it's amazing how flexible his voice is and lung capacity. I've been compared to him when I sing since I always change my voice to how the original singer sounds.
arachnid_flame
I do that too emo-tmbgtalk_lol2.gif it's REALLY fun for me to sing along with Bob Dylan music emo-tmbgtalk_yeah.gif

Weird Al's hilarious emo-tmbgtalk_yeah.gif I had a friend who went and saw him , and she said "I have all your CDs!" and he replied "well, give 'em back!" I'd love to see hime live someday emo-tmbgtalk_grnbiggrin.gif

you've got awesome taste too, GR

oh! I need to add David Bowie and Elvis Costello to my list too, that's who I ws forgetting! emo-tmbgtalk_nut.gif

cassettes are easy to loose, I used to have like a ton of them, but the only ones I could find when I was packing were the Primus and Rush cassettes my friend gave me emo-tmbgtalk_dunno.gif

Bloc Party
Santana
Evanescence
Fall Out Boy
Oingo Boingo

My top 10 other than TMBG (in no particular order):

The Beatles
The Zombies
Wilco
Mason Jennings
Phil Ochs
Cub
Pink Floyd
R.E.M.
Bôa (the British alt-rock band, not the Korean pop star)
The Magnetic Fields

Others:
Syd Barrett
Radiohead
Kraftwerk
Rob Dougan
The Redwalls
Sparks
Jonathan Coulton
Justice
Pere Ubu
Devo
Frank Zappa
thenewno2
Liam Lynch

I find it odd how many of these bands I only know of because of TMBG. For instance, I heard about Mason Jennings and The Magnetic Fields because they were on Flansburgh's radio show. I know about Cub and Phil Ochs because they covered songs by both. And I know about Pere Ubu because Tony Maimone played in TMBG's backing band for a while.

emo-tmbgtalk_0000clap.gif

that's how we found out about The Meat Puppets. years ago, Flansy said that's what he'd been listening to in one of their info club letters. emo-tmbgtalk_yeah.gif (back when they still came in the mail) emo-old.gif

I'll listen to just about anything, but I mainly listen to alot of metal (and stuff from it's countless sub-genres) as well as alot of Japanese rock and TV soundtracks along with stuff like TMBG and some other random stuff thrown into the mix.

The language barrier with the Japanese stuff isn't much of a problem for me because I'm pretty "shallow" when it comes to music. What I mean by that is I don't normally care for the lyrics in a song or where the inspiration for them came from, all I care about is the sound. So even though the lyrics might sound like gibberish... it doesn't matter as long as it sounds cool. emo-tmbgtalk_girlslayer.gif

Anyways, some specific stuff that I like in alphabetical-ish order since I'm just going through my music folder and listing what I listen to the most; emo-tmbgtalk_lol2.gif

After Forever
Animetal
Audioslave
The Beatles
The Black Keys
Cake
CKY
Daft Punk
Dragonforce
Dream Theater / Liquid Tension Experiment
Fear Factory
Gorillaz
IOSYS
Jonathan Coulton
JunkieXL
Keane
Led Zeppelin
Lil' Wayne (Is this one out of place or what? He's funny. emo-lmao.gif )
Megaherz
Metalica
M.O.V.E.
Polysics
Rammstein
Scatman John
Sonata Arctica
Sublime
System of a Down
Tenacious D
Trans-Siberian Orchestra
White Zombie / Rob Zombie
X-Japan

Obviously missing some really important / good stuff, but this is just the bands I listen to the most.

i know just exactly what you mean. emo-tmbgtalk_thumbup.gif i'm the same way. that's why i suck so bad at song interpretation. i don't really care what a song means, like 96% of the time. emo-tmbgtalk_freak.gif all i care about is how it makes me feel.

when i think about what songs mean, i always think of that great quote from Don McLean. when asked what American Pie meant, he said "it means i'll never have to work again". emo-tmbgtalk_lol2.gif
arachnid_flame
emo-tmbgtalk_lol2.gif I agree. for example, I'm really into Pixies music and a lot of their lyrics doesn't make much sense at all. There's a lot of really surreal, cryptic lyrics in their songs. I really dig that emo-tmbgtalk_grnbiggrin.gif

for me, there are artists that make me "feel", and others make me "think". But when I manage to find a musical artist that can do both, it's something that is rare and inspiring emo-tmbgtalk_daz.gif

that Number Girl video was cool T-bird, thanks for sharing! emo-tmbgtalk_girlslayer.gif

Just watched Whirlpool by the Meat Puppets on youtube.

I love The Meat Puppet's version of Whirlpool, I really dig the extra lyrics:

"The whirlpool's mother wore a jacket she'd sewn out of dental floss
It was stolen by a monkey that sold it to an albatross"

too cool emo-tmbgtalk_daz.gif

That's how I heard about the band Bôa. They did the opening theme for an anime called Serial Experiments Lain. The song is called Duvet. Interestingly the only times they've been able to afford playing in America is when anime conventions hire them to play. The lead singer plays in England all the time though.

Here is the band's music video for the song.

Lord PichuPal
I'm the same way, I don't care about lyrics or language as much as I do about the actual song. In my case, I end up learning how to sing along regardless if I really get into the song. Some songs, mostly My Chemical Romance ones, make me wonder what it was written about, like "Sleep" and "Helena". I also seem to like songs that make you feel sad or sound sad for some reason. But I also have tons of angry sounding songs (like heavy metal kind of things) that I play when I'm angry, too. Something about depressing songs makes me enjoy it, though.

I enjoyed the show alot, it's one of those shows that is really complex and tries to confuse you. If you've seen and liked Paranoia Agent or Boogiepop Phantom, I'd definitely recommend it. It's only 13 episodes, so it's not that big of a time investment if you end up not liking it.

Everybody I've talked to thought it was too confusing.

how interesting! emo-tmbgtalk_grnbiggrin.gif so, did they do the theme for the Japanese version of Lain, or just the English dub? I've seen that show before, it's a really pretty theme song emo-tmbgtalk_daz.gif

I've been really getting hooked on the German band Tokio Hotel lately ever since I listened to their English album Scream (which is a compilation of songs from their first two albums translated from German). They're only 18-20 currently and are extremely popular in Europe right now, and are enjoying a ton of success right now. Amazing they started making music at age 13. A lot of their songs are pretty deep and meaningful stuff, like "Don't Jump" which is about encouraging teens not to commit suicide. Can find some of their songs on YouTube as well.
