Full Version: Movies you're supposed to like that you don't

i thought i'd do a twist on Bones' topic. emo-emo-tmbgtalk_angeldevil.gif kinda like that episode of Seinfeld (that was just on a couple of days ago) where Elaine hated The English Patient. emo-tongue3.gif i never saw that one, but i bet i'd hate it too.

my #1 is Titanic. emo-0tmbgtalk_razzy.gif i didn't like that movie till the boat finally started to sink, like 2 hours in. emo-000tmbgtalk_yawn2.gif even then, it still made me really sleepy. the ice cube people were kinda cool though...

the first & last Lord of the Rings movies. emo-000tmbgtalk_yawn2.gif the 2nd was ok, cuz it had walking trees. emo-tongue3.gif

Last Of The Mohicans... sorry. it was just way too depressing for me. a lot of Daniel Day Lewis movies make me feel like that. i know he's supposed to be the world's greatest actor & all, but... emo-tmbgtalk_dunno.gif

The Lion King. what can i say? i just couldn't find one thing to like about it. it was the same old stale story i've seen a million times... but in cartoon form. yuck. emo-th_tongue6.gif

i'm sure i have more, but i wouldn't want to upset too many people on the very first post. emo-11zwinky.gif

ok, your go... emo-tmbgtalk_naughty2.gif (if you have the guts) emo-tongue57.gif

(as i discussed this thread with Noah just now, he named 2 he hates that i hate too, but i'll let him post about em) emo-tmbgtalk_lol5.gif
Mister Bones
Those ice cube people always looked like they were covered in sugar frosting to me. emo-tmbgtalk_drooling3.gif

As for me, I LOATHE Fargo! Completely pointless film that could have easily been a made for tv movie. It was made for the single purpose of mocking a regional accent and it always bugged the heck out of me that no one else realized that. It's a one joke movie all the way through. A very bad joke in fact.

I'm not a big fan of Raging Bull either. I couldn't care less what happened to the despicable characters in that.
biff
i hated Fargo the first time i watched it, but now i love it! i watch it every time it's on. emo-tmbgtalk_lol2.gif

i never saw Raging Bull. maybe that's a good thing. emo-tmbgtalk_yeah.gif & i know just what you mean. i usually have a hard time liking a movie if the main character has no redeeming qualities whatsoever. emo-0tmbgtalk_razzy.gif

how about No Direction Home? the Bob Dylan documentary by Martin Scorsese. no offense on Marty, i love him... but the whole movie (like 3 hours) just kept repeating & repeating the same point over & over & over. ok, i get it. people were mad when he started using an electric guitar. he got heckled at shows. the Brits was mad. i get it. seriously. please stop. emo-tmbgtalk_rolleyes2.gif

Planet Of The Apes. the remake. i didn't care about anyone in that movie, & it was the most blatantly "going for the PG13" movie i've ever seen. emo-tmbgtalk_grumbles.gif (well, until The Dark Knight, that is. why is it that nobody bleeds in Gotham? that's all i wanna know) emo-tmbgtalk_lol5.gif
biff
umm... please don't beat me down for this one, anybody...

Donnie Darko. i didn't get it. not at all. i know everybody loves it, but i'll never know why. emo-tmbgtalk_dunno.gif

I've said it before and I'll say it again -- Natural Born Killers. I know some people (including Entertainment Weekly and my sister) loved it, but I thought it was just a shrill mess that didn't work as either thriller or satire.

Cold Mountain is another that I wanted to like, but I couldn't get into it. (More recently, though, I checked out the book and I enjoyed it very much -- a bit graphic in places, but I really felt for the characters.)

I'm sure there are more, but that's all I can think of for now...

ignatz
I agree with you on Natural Born Killers. Despite the good performances of Tommy Lee Jones and Robert Downey Jr. I can't really stand it. Way too over the top and preachy.

The one I'm going to say is A Clockwork Orange. It looks good, but I just don't think the story is all that interesting. I don't really car much about Alex as a character either. I've always had issues with that one.
biff
i hated A Clockwork Orange. emo-0tmbgtalk_razzy.gif it was a total waste of film, IMO.

another one i thought really sucked was The Blair Witch Project. i felt really ripped off coming out of the theater after that one... especially since it played on one of the smaller screens, & it was still too small to fill it up. emo-tmbgtalk_grumbles.gif i waited through the whole thing for something to happen, but nothing ever did. the only thing that was scary in that movie was the boogers coming out of that annoying chick's nose during her extreme closeup scene. emo-tongue3.gif

Brokeback Mountain
I'm not a homophob or anything like that. I didn't care about the gay part. What bugs me is how everyone one thinks it's just a sad love story and the only thing that happened was that they used eachother to get the urges out of the way. They didn't love eachother. they treated eachother like crap and everyone is always "it's so sad that he lost the one he loved" no he didn't! he lost his f*#k buddy. that's not sad! they cheated on their wives and treated eachother like crap. these characters were assholes.
biff
i never saw that one, cuz when i heard about how they cheated on their wives & stuff, i knew i'd have no sympathy for them & that i'd probably hate it just like you did. emo-emot-LOL.gif

& i'm not a homophobe either, so there. emo-tongue3.gif i mean... i'm the chick who is hooked on Hedwig, & Rocky Horror. emo-tmbgtalk_lol5.gif at least with Hedwig & Frank, they were honest about who they were... even if they weren't always sure who they were. you struggled right along with em, & loved em for it. emo-tmbgtalk_dunno.gif

if it's ever on IFC, i plan to watch it just to see, but i bet i'll still agree with you.
GRChereck
I looooove Rocky Horror! And I think Hedwig is right up there with it. emo-tmbgtalk_daz.gif

I actually caught Brokeback on Bravo a month or two ago... I second your opinion, klim -- I couldn't get into it at all, except to feel a bit bad for the guys' wives and kids. emo-Sad_anim.gif

klimdeeni
thank you so much!!!

I feel like the only one who doesn't like the movie!
well besides the stupid people who just go "eww gay people!" and leave it at that
biff
well there you go then. emo-tmbgtalk_lol2.gif

i thought of one last night, but now i forget. emo-tongue3.gif

Terminator 2: Judgement Day

I'm a fan of the franchise, but I hated the most popular installment. Everyone was so impressed with the special effects, I felt like I was the only one who recognized the story was a weak frame to showcase them. Action, sci-fi, fantasy and horror movies require the audience to suspend a certain amount of disbelief and not constantly demand "That can't happen!" If the film is made well, the viewer gets wrapped up in the fantasy and won't question. T2 was nowhere there. I found it inconceivable that such a thing a a "liquid metal cyborg" could be built or function as it does in the film, or that it could travel through time according to the established rules of the franchise (only living flesh or material fully encased by flesh.) The story didn't offer enough of a new direction from the original, but instead of the relatable Sarah Conner from 1984, we have this brat I can't stand who teaches the Terminator how to say "Hasta la vista."

The Matrix

Again, someone learns a new trick he can teach his computer to do and makes a whole film just to show "Hey everybody! Look what I can do!" Keanu Reeves is a bad actor, everyone knows it, but far to few people seem to mind. The sci-fi concept is intriguing but in no way original, and better explored in Cronenberg's eXistenZ from the same year. I also resent the effect it had on action cinema for the years that followed, all those movies exploiting these effects when totally inappropriate (and all the reference gags in crappy CGI kiddie movies.) I noticed that after the Lord of the Rings first movie came out suddenly combat was back to being portrayed in the traditional way.

Napoleon Dynamite

Once it was in vogue to make teenage comedies that empathized with and inspired kids that don't fit in, but apparently the trend has turned to singling out and mocking anyone like that.

Hairspray (2007)

It wasn't terrible, but I just can't stand that by adapting a John Waters film they sterilized everything that was Waters about it until it was squeaky clean.

There Will Be Blood

Daniel Day-Lewis was beyond over the top, his character's motivations were often unclear. Was he supposed to be evil? Greedy? Self serving? To me he just seemed nuts.

Shrek

Dropping names and pop culture references do not constitute jokes.

About Lord of the Rings: I liked Fellowship when I first saw it in the theaters. I have to admit that I really had to lie to myself to like the second film, and the third one I tried but failed to convince myself it was okay. This was because I liked the books but mainly because I'm a huge Peter Jackson fan. Unfortunately these bloated, self-important behemoths (also including King Kong) are a far way from the grass roots approach of Dead Alive (AKA Braindead). About Brokeback Mountain: you guys are totally right, I agree completely. It isn't a great love story. It's just a poor movie. (And calling it a "great love story" isn't going to get more straight men in the theatre anyway.) About The Blair Witch Project:
It is definitely true that it's hype was totally bogus, but almost right after it's release, it really felt the backlash it deserved.

By the end of it, I believe he was supposed to be nuts. emo-tmbgtalk_lol2.gif

But seriously, I took DDL's portrayal as that of a self-made man -- and a bit of a misanthrope ("I look at people and see nothing worth liking") -- who gradually descends into madness and snuffs out his humanity as he gains more in material wealth; and besides that, I liked that there was something deliberately, darkly comic in his character and performance. emo-tmbgtalk_hmm.gif (I also took the movie's central conflict, the battle of wills between the oilman and the preacher, as symbolic of the strangleholds that Big Business and the Religious Right have on our country's government today.)

As for ND, I actually did like that one for its quirky dialogue and deadpan humor, but I didn't think it was nearly as hilarious as a lot of people made it out to be. emo-tmbgtalk_ohwe.gif

Terminator 2: Judgement Day ~ i don't even remember if i saw it or not. emo-tongue3.gif i would imagine i did, but it doesn't stand out in any way.

The Matrix ~ i was not impressed.

Napoleon Dynamite ~ i loved it. i don't think i took it the same way as you did. emo-tmbgtalk_dunno.gif

Hairspray (2007) ~ i refused to even see it, cuz i am a fan of the John Waters movie. i hope he made a ton of money off it though. emo-tmbgtalk_yeah.gif i love him. emo-tmbgtalk_hearts.gif

There Will Be Blood ~ never saw it. i'm not a big Daniel Day fan in general though. emo-tmbgtalk_dunno.gif

Shrek ~ galoot's had it on the TV a million times, but i've never sat & watched it once. cartoons, in general, kinda bore me. emo-tongue3.gif also, i'm not a fan of the Scottish Mike Myers. when i hear Shreck talking, i always think of that big grody guy in the Austin Powers movies, & he turns me right off. he was my main gripe with those movies. i absolutely hate him. emo-th_tongue6.gif

Lord of the Rings ~ "bloated, self-important behemoth" i can't add anything more to that. emo-tmbgtalk_lol2.gif i liked the walkin trees. that was about it. i never could get into the books either. emo-tmbgtalk_dunno.gif

i liked King Kong, but there's no topping the original with Fay Wray. that was a great movie. emo-tmbgtalk_thumbup.gif i don't know why people keep trying to make a better version, cuz no one ever will. some things are better left alone.

i loooove Dead Alive/Braindead. what a waste of potential. i've never seen another Peter Jackson movie that was as good as that one. he shoulda stayed funny. he probably wouldn't be anywhere near as rich & famous as he is now if he woulda though. still... i wish he woulda stayed funny.

The Blair Witch Project ~ it might have had a huge backlash, but it made a ton of money, which will always annoy me. emo-tmbgtalk_grumbles.gif i bet it cost like 10 bux to make it. emo-tmbgtalk_rolleyes2.gif

that was fun. emo-tmbgtalk_lol2.gif

Gangs Of New York didn't really grab me either. emo-tmbgtalk_dunno.gif

i'm sure it would've been funnier to me if i would have actually seen There Will Be Blood. emo-tongue3.gif

ET - I know everyone loves this but I could never get into it or like it

Planet of the Apes - any of them.. Just didn't like these either

Pineapple Express - was more weird than funny. Sort of unpleasant overall
biff
i wanted to see Pineapple Express, but then i saw the reviews & decided to wait till it's out on video. emo-tmbgtalk_dunno.gif i love both of those guys though. love em. emo-tmbgtalk_hearts.gif

speekina of Costner films (on the bad movies you like thread) i absolutely hated Dances With Wolves. it was sooooooo loooong & booooring. emo-th_tongue6.gif

Oh me too! I came into the theater with high hopes. I loved Superbad and Knocked Up! Pineapple Express was kinda different than those two
biff
that's too bad. emo-050505tmbgtalk_ohwell050505.gif

i still wanna rent it when it comes out though. emo-tmbgtalk_lol2.gif
