ok, Pich, here's a thread for you to talk sports on. emo-thumbsup.gif

Cheating Scandal Could Leave Florida St. Without Top Players emo-tmbgtalk_eek00000000.gif

hoo boy! emo-tmbgtalk_lol5.gif
Lord PichuPal
It sure is fitting for a sports nerd like me. Hopefully it won't be just occupied by the likes of myself and any others willing to read what rambles and rants I've got next on sports.
lajoyce
Hey if anyone wants to talk hockey emo-tmbgtalk_naughty2.gif
biff
i don't know much about hockey, but i'll talk about anything. emo-emot-LOL.gif

you know i'll talk sports with you, Pich. that's what 'the return of the endless thread' kinda turned into at the old board anyway. emo-tmbgtalk_lol5.gif for a chick, i'm fairly knowledgeable about most of em. emo-tmbgtalk_bigblush.gif that's pretty much all galoot talks about. emo-11zwinky.gif

and you know... horrid could talk about cricket all day long. emo-tmbgtalk_lol2.gif
Lord PichuPal
It sort of did since I lacked things to talk about in it other than sporty things. My days/life are too uneventful or uninteresting to talk about most of the time.

But on the subject of hockey, I completed the NRHL's draft for 2008 last night. Results are posted on my site, and also plan to remodel the site in February to dedicate it fully to the NRHL (even if hardly anyone looks at it or cares about it).
biff
yeah, mine's pretty boring too. i just tend to be the talky type, even if i have nothing important to say. emo-11zwinky.gif
biff
Thirty-six Florida State players won't be going to the Dec. 31 Music City Bowl against Kentucky because of an academic cheating scandal, violations of team rules, injuries or other reasons.

http://sports.myway.com/news/12222007/v8149.html

emo-jaw-dropping.gif

i bet they'll be easy to beat. emo-lmao.gif
Lord PichuPal
Yeah, though this one guy who coached the Razorbacks once who now is an analyst on ESPN said he had to deal with that once for a Bowl game and his Hogs won like 28-6 or something. He says they just have to focus on what they got, and not on what they don't have.
biff
i'm gonna have to ask galoot about that, cuz i don't remember it at all. emo-tmbgtalk_eek00000000.gif

i bet they still lose though. emo-tmbgtalk_lol2.gif
Lord PichuPal
New York Giants leading the evil New England Patriots 21-16 at halftime so far. Only 30 minutes away from ruining their "perfect season". Go G-Men.
lajoyce
Yeah, I'm bummed the Giants lost! I wanted them to win! I'm sure the sports page headline in the paper tomorrow is gonna say something like "evil empire" or "cheaters" about the Pats haha
biff
dang! emo-tmbgtalk_cuss.gif i wanted New England to lose too!!! emo-tmbgtalk_argh.gif
Lord PichuPal
I remember when I watched them play Baltimore, I was getting disappointed at the end when the calls kept going against the Ravens just to help New England win. Oh well, maybe they'll get knocked off in the playoffs by the likes of Jacksonville or some other dark horse team.
biff
i would LOVE to see the Jags beat em. Matt Jones is on that team!!! emo-tmbgtalk_hearts.gif (ex-Hog factor) emo-tmbgtalk_lol2.gif
Lord PichuPal
Florida State is tied 14-14 with Kentucky right now early in the 3rd. Seems missing 36 players isn't hurting them too badly so far. We'll just have to see how they finish (though as my last post shows, stating the score mid-game never ends well). Hopefully Michigan can beat the Gators tomorrow, surprise everyone in the nation who thinks Florida will steam roll them.
biff
good luck to your Michigan guys, Pichu. emo-CROSSFINGER.GIF

i think Kentucky underestimated their opponent last night, but they ended up winning. Florida made a good showing though, considering. emo-emot-LOL.gif

the Hogs will be on pretty soon... emo-tmbgtalk_nailbiter.gif

i'm glad Darren gets to play. he almost didn't. emo-tmbgtalk_eek00000000.gif

Go HOGS Go!!!!! emo-emo-tmbgtalk_woo.gif

Anyone watching the NHL Winter Classic? 73,000+ people at the game, and it sounds loud in that stadium.
Its awesome! It makes me wanna play a hockey game outside!
Lord PichuPal
I watched most of the 3rd period. Was tough to watch when I had the Michigan game to watch as well, and I slept until 3 pm. Michigan stomped Florida 41-35 also thanks to some great defense on the final two offensive drives the Gators were given. Lloyd Carr and his seniors get to move on with one final win under their belt, only the first bowl win for that class of seniors as well. It'll be so weird next year watching the Wolverines without Adrian Arrington, Chad Henne, Jake Long, or Mike Hart.

Edit: Watching the Rose Bowl now and the Illinois marching band is playing "Stairway to Heaven" at halftime. Thought it'd be worth mentioning before I forget it later.
biff
emo-congrat.gif to Michigan!

we sucked. emo-Sad_anim.gif it was embarrassing. emo-tmbgtalk_lol2.gif

man, i'm glad that's over. emo-0tmbgtalk_whew.gif

i don't even know if we get hockey games on TV here. emo-tmbgtalk_hmm.gif it's the one sport galoot doesn't follow...
biff
we just saw a clip of that hockey game on TV. that looked pretty wild! emo-tmbgtalk_girlslayer.gif
Lord PichuPal
I watched it on CBC, and turns out it was also on NBC which I didn't know. And I've heard that Missouri was basically showcasing what they could do, much at the expense of Arkansas. But all teams with interim coaches have yet to win this bowl season, and the Hogs were just adding to that number with that loss.
biff
it looks like West Virginia is fixin to win with one. emo-tmbgtalk_lol2.gif

Hawaii sucked so bad that nobody even noticed the Razorbacks. it's a thang. emo-tmbgtalk_yeah.gif
horrid goblin
Blackcaps were on a bit of a losing streak, we lost 4-1 to South Africa then 3-0 to Australia, but so far we're up 3-0 against Bangladesh, Bangladesh suck but I'll take whatever wins I can get. But the last game we whopped em so hard it was unbelievable, it was meant to be 50 overs each way, we got them all out in 37, and then got there score in 6, so it wasn't even half a games worth. Brendan McCullum hit 80* off just 28 balls, breaking his own record for fastest 50 for a New Zealander which he got of 19 balls, which was only 2 balls off breaking the world record.

[dohtml]<object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/nILKFhKoDXc&rel=1"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/nILKFhKoDXc&rel=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>[/dohtml]
biff
that's really impressive, HG. emo-thumbsup.gif too bad Brendan MacCullum didn't have a couple more balls. emo-11zwinky.gif

horrid goblin
Also in that match Daniel Vettori snuck ahead to get the most people out in the calander year 0f 2007, and has now got more people out that any other Blackcap ever, and he's still fairly young so he's probably going to extend that lead by a big margin.
biff
excellent. emo-000lighter_4744.gif
Lord PichuPal
I honestly have no clue what any of it means, but it sounds like something great anyway. So congrats to those guys on their pwnsome records for New Zealand in a sport us Americans may never fully understand.
biff
emo-tmbgtalk_lol5.gif if horrid has anything to do with it, we will. emo-tmbgtalk_yeah.gif

did i mention that for Christmas, Keesha got Nathan tickets for opening day at Wrigley to see the Cubs? emo-tmbgtalk_naughty2.gif he is so excited!!! he was already planning to go to Chicago on spring break, so... emo-thumbsup.gif
Lord PichuPal
That does rock. Other than tickets to see the Tigers on Opening Day, those are pretty awesome. Hopefully the Cubs actually win that day.
biff
i hope so too. emo-CROSSFINGER.GIF & since it's opening day, he'll probably get to see Zambrano pitch. emo-thumbsup.gif

he said it's the only thing on his "things to do before he dies" list. emo-emot-LOL.gif
Lord PichuPal
The good old Bayou Tigers from LSU won the championship game last night. I forget what the score is already since it wasn't important (I think 31-17). But I knew Ohio State would lose, I knew they'd be overmatched, I knew they stood NO CHANCE of winning. This game was a waste of everyone's time, may as well just handed the trophy to LSU at the start since we knew they'd win. This was one more reason why the Bowl System sucks.
biff
emo-lmao.gif you must be psychic. emo-11zwinky.gif

i was so proud, cuz LSU is in the SEC with us, & we beat them during the regular season. emo-tmbgtalk_yeah.gif

let's face it... the SEC is the toughest conference... bar none. emo-thumbsup.gif

Yeah, I'm kidna surprised that was such big news! It happened in my town, but I'm not sure where exactly. It was written up as a "piano bar" of which there are about 3. At least he didn't hurt his toe this time.
biff
emo-0tmbgtalk_roflmao.gif yeah.

guess what? i got to tell Dad before he heard it on the street! YaY Me!!! emo-emo-tmbgtalk_woo.gif

do you ever see him around town? emo-tmbgtalk_hmm.gif
Lord PichuPal
Just heard on TV now as I prepare for bed that Michigan's freshman QB Ryan Mallett officially transferred to Arkansas. Which means Bobby Petrino and his Hogs will be welcoming a one-year Michigan man to the team. Though he has to sit out a season first before he can play, he's still a Hog now.
biff
i was just coming here to tell you that! emo-tmbgtalk_lol2.gif

are you mad that we stole your guy? emo-tmbgtalk_nailbiter.gif
Lord PichuPal
He was supposed to be taking over for Chad Henne this year, but decided to screw us because of the coaching change. We all knew up here he was preparing to leave for possibly a SEC school where it was rumored one of our old assistants was headed. Though rumors kept saying he'd go to Tennessee. No matter what, we're going to have a new QB under Rich Rodriguez anyway so it could've been Mallett, or it could be someone else.
biff
ok. emo-tmbgtalk_lol2.gif
Lord PichuPal
#1 ranked and undefeated North Carolina lost at home 82-80 to ACC opponent Maryland not long ago. Tyler Hansbrough, the guy they can never stop talking about, missed a last-second three off an inbound pass that could've won the game. It was hilarious watching the fans in the crowd, since they were all in tears and shit. Not like the game eliminates them from the national title race or anything, or even a conference title. Just means they won't be undefeated (which I doubt they could've did anyway).
biff
emo-tmbgtalk_lol2.gif it's always kinda funny when people cry over a ball game. emo-tmbgtalk_rolleyes2.gif
lajoyce
Lets go Giantsss tonight!

Giants vs Patriots in the Super Bowl. New York vs New England. Who do you choose? I take the G-Men all the way. I want to watch the Pats lose one game shy of perfection. emo-emo-tmbgtalk_angeldevil.gif
biff
yeah. i'm sick of em. emo-tmbgtalk_lol2.gif

Go Giants!!! emo-emo-tmbgtalk_woo.gif

heck yeah GIANTS!
I want them to beat the pats so bad!

Haha I like those commercials too
biff
YaY! emo-tmbgtalk_lol2.gif
Lord PichuPal
emo-lmao.gif Those loser Patriots lost 17-14 to the G-Men in the Super Bowl today, so they finished 18-1 instead of 19-0. Just as I hoped, the bastards New England lost it all a game shy of perfection. I love New York just for this alone. emo-tmbgtalk_0000clap.gif
biff
emo-tmbgtalk_lol2.gif it was so funny. emo-tmbgtalk_thumbup.gif Go Giants! emo-emo-tmbgtalk_woo.gif
lajoyce
Yeahhh Giants!!
I had so much fun watching this game at my friend's superbowl party! Take THAT, Tom Brady! emo-tmbgtalk_lol5.gif they were kickin his butt on defense
biff
he looked so sad & confused. emo-emot-LOL.gif
Lord PichuPal
Now instead of hearing about how great the Patriots were all year for the next 5-6 months, we get to hear how they fucked up perfection on the final game. It's enough to make me cheer for the G-Men over the Lions.
biff
who are the G-Men? emo-tmbgtalk_bigblush.gif
Lord PichuPal
That's the most common nickname people call the Giants by. Not actually sure where they came up with it.
lajoyce
Yeah, I've heard it, seen it in the paper, etc.

we lost game 3, in game 4 England got 346 runs and it ended in a tie, how does that happen? ver intense match neede2 off the last ball to win, just manged to squeeze out 1.

last game if we win we take the series, if England win the series is drawn.
biff
y'all need overtime. emo-tmbgtalk_nut.gif

the Hogs won last night. YaY. emo-emo-tmbgtalk_woo.gif
Lord PichuPal
And for the NBA trade deadline, the Cavs got Ben Wallace, Wally Szerbiak, and some other dude from Chicago and Seattle each, sending other guys to those two in return. I don't see how Wallace will help them, he's a burned out bum since he left Detroit two years ago.
biff
emo-tmbgtalk_lol2.gif

luckily for me, galoot's not all that interested in the NBA. emo-tmbgtalk_thumbup.gif he likes to know where ex-Hogs end up going, but that's about it. he hardly ever watches a game.
Lord PichuPal
It's fictional, but still sports-related. NRHL season began last night with Columbus winning 1-0 at Atlanta and Kansas City beating San Jose in OT 4-3 in their home opener. The website is already updated to reflect it, and even box scores posted for both games. Stats about to be up soon as I make the Excel sheet for them.
biff
cool. emo-tmbgtalk_thumbup.gif

here's something i've always wondered about...

if it's fictional... how do you know who won? emo-tmbgtalk_hmm.gif
Lord PichuPal
I got my ways of getting the score (card flip, with only Ace through 7 in the deck, and tens for 0s). As of this season I'm actually doing box scores with it to give more detail to the games and make it more believable.
biff
that's pretty cool. emo-tmbgtalk_thumbup.gif
Lord PichuPal
Big news from the first weekend of games: Seattle extends their regular-season winning streak to 12 games with their 4-0 victory Sunday at San Jose, Dominik Antrovic gets the shutout; Detroit extends their regular season losing streak to 13 games after losing their home opener 5-1 to Buffalo Sunday, tying the longest streak in league history also set by Detroit back in 2006; Knoxville got blew out 6-2 at home by Chicago also on Sunday, extending their losing streak to 7 games; Washington lose 3-2 in a shootout (1-0 in the SO) to Atlanta at home Saturday, following the raising of their championship banners from last season; Dallas lost 3-0 to Utah at home as well Saturday, after raising all three of their banners from last season; Columbus was the only champion (division, conference, and Horner's Cup) who played their home opener to win their game, beating Toronto 4-1 to continue dominance against Central Division foes (16-1-0 between this season and last).

Lots of things happening in this first weekend. Also, Phoenix's Ludwig Krueger II got 9 penalty minutes in the Phantoms' 6-5 OT loss at Los Angeles. He fought with rookie Brent Lawson and had two other penalties, displaying his aggressive recklessness early in the season.
biff
the Razorbacks won on Saturday. maybe they still have a chance to make it to the NCAA tournament... if they win out the rest of the season. emo-CROSSFINGER.GIF

i was happy that the Cubs won. emo-tmbgtalk_grnbiggrin.gif

i can't believe it's almost baseball season. emo-tmbgtalk_nut.gif i keep forgetting to ask Nathan about his trip to Chicago for opening day. i hope he's still gonna get to go, since he has a job now. emo-CROSSFINGER.GIF
Lord PichuPal
The Cubs think this will be the year they finally end the curse, which would be nice. End the curse during its 100th anniversary, sounds good.
biff
yeah well... we'll see. emo-tmbgtalk_lol2.gif
Lord PichuPal
News from the NRHL: Phoenix Phantoms forward Ludwig Krueger II got himself 8 PIMs (penalties in minutes) Wednesday night in the Phantoms' 4-0 win over the Las Vegas Leopards. In the 3rd period with the game in hand, Krueger was called for slashing and was ejected from the game for his actions. The penalty gave him 4 minutes in the box for a teammate to serve as the player, Michael-Sean Morgan, was injured. Morgan suffered a sprained knee from the illegal play and will miss 3 weeks, while Krueger has been issued a warning from the league. This is only Krueger's 2nd year in the league, after being drafted by Knoxville last season and released in June before signing with Phoenix in July. He's already been suspended twice (one game each) during his rookie season, and could be looking at another suspension if he keeps playing this dirty. Two games in, he already has 17 PIMs to lead the league.

Sorry that it's such a long thing, but it's worth mentioning to any interested.
biff
emo-tmbgtalk_hmm.gif that's that fake thing, right?

i'm so unknowledgeable about hockey i can't tell real hockey from fake hockey. emo-tmbgtalk_bigblush.gif
Lord PichuPal
Yes, that's the fake one. The NRHL is the fictional one, and the NHL is real. The main difference in the acronyms is just the R.
biff
ok, i'll remember that next time. emo-tmbgtalk_thumbup.gif
Lord PichuPal
NRHL news: Detroit stretched their losing streak to 14 games, while Seattle has now won 13 straight. Dominik Antrovic of Seattle also has 2 straight shutouts through their first two games, and looks to get another Wednesday at Utah. Along with Antrovic, Utah's Jason Whitney, Chicago's Josh Barger, and Philly's Rob Chico are the only undefeated goalies while Miami's Bill Arite, San Jose's Rick Yohman, and Detroit's Matias Taavetti are the only winless goalies. On the Krueger watch, Ludwig has 21 penalty minutes through 3 games which is 10 more than Nicholas Abraham, who has 11 for 2nd.
biff
go fake hockey! emo-emo-tmbgtalk_woo.gif
Lord PichuPal
NRHL Update: Seattle won 4-2 at Utah, their 14th win in a row, and Detroit lost 5-1 at Philadelphia for their 15th straight loss. Detroit host rival Washington Sunday, while Seattle visits Las Vegas Sunday.

As for real sports, Michigan beat Iowa in the opening round of the Big Ten Tournament and face Wisconsin next, while Western Michigan beat Eastern Michigan in MAC Quarterfinals and face Akron in the MAC Semifinals. Other thing, the Detroit Red Wings won 5-3 over Dallas tonight to clinch a playoff berth for the 17th straight season (longest by any professional sports team), 8th straight 100-point season (tied for longest in NHL history), and 7th straight Central Division title. All this during a 5-game winning streak that followed the worst stretch the Wings have ever been through since the 90s.

Arkansas upset Vanderbilt today in the SEC tournament after their first round bye, but they face Tennessee tomorrow so I'd say their dreams are about to be crushed big time.
biff
well that's not very nice. emo-tmbgtalk_lol2.gif

galoot sez his dream was for them to at least win one, so now the rest is gravy. emo-tmbgtalk_lol5.gif

here is a thang...

SEC moves remaining games to Georgia Tech after storm damages dome

The Associated Press

ATLANTA — The Southeastern Conference moved the rest of its men’s basketball tournament to Georgia Tech after a possible tornado damaged the Georgia Dome, and one team will have to play a doubleheader Saturday.

The Georgia-Kentucky quarterfinal game, which was postponed Friday after the storm struck, will be played at noon Saturday. The winner of that game will have to return in the evening to face Mississippi State in the semifinals.

The other semifinal between No. 4 Tennessee and Arkansas will be played at 6 p.m. Saturday.

Since Alexander Memorial Coliseum is smaller than the Georgia Dome — 9,100 seats as opposed to 26,000 in the dome’s basketball configuration — only players’ families and those with working credentials will be allowed to attend the remaining games.

The championship will be held Sunday.

i can't believe one of those poor teams are gonna have to play two in one day! emo-tmbgtalk_eek00000000.gif

& it's a shame that so many people who went there to see the tournament aren't gonna be able to go now. emo-tmbgtalk_grumbles.gif

I'll admit I was wrong, I'm very impressed and happy that the Hogs pulled off the upset. When I saw them say on ESPN that Arkansas just beat Tennessee 92-91 I was pretty shocked. Good luck to them tomorrow against Georgia in the SEC Championship game. Kent State beat Akron in the MAC title game, so Western Michigan didn't get the auto bid and probably won't get in at all due to being in a mid-major conference.
biff
thanks for wishing us luck, Pich! emo-tmbgtalk_grnbiggrin.gif

i had a really good feeling about the game yesterday, but i was still surprised! emo-tmbgtalk_lol2.gif

here's a write up...

http://sports.myway.com/news/03152008/v7885.html

we were rooting for Georgia to win, & they did! i hope they're really tired today, after having to play twice yesterday. emo-evilgrin0009999.gif

Lord PichuPal
Seems that backfired big time, Georgia ended up winning the game and the SEC title. So now Georgia's only hope of a tournament bid has been fulfilled, and all those bubble teams will be shouting at Arkansas for blowing it like that.
biff
emo-tmbgtalk_lol5.gif yeah, we blew it. we're in the NCAA tournament, but we're a 9 seed, which is about the worst seed you can get. emo-tmbgtalk_dunno.gif

not bad for a first year coach though... although, he did inherit a team that had already been playing together for a long time. emo-tmbgtalk_dunno.gif
Lord PichuPal
NRHL update: Seattle extends the streak to 15 straight wins with their 4-1 win over Las Vegas, while Detroit snapped the 15-game losing streak with a 5-3 win at home over their hated rivals Washington. Chicago and Philadelphia also stay perfect, as the Comets beat Miami 3-1 and the Pirates beat Toronto 3-2 in OT. The Magnets and San Jose Stingrays, who lost 2-0 to Dallas at home, are the only winless teams remaining. And Ludwig Krueger II got 7 minutes of penalty time during Phoenix's 6-5 win over Utah, including a spearing call that got him ejected. Krueger will be suspended 1-2 games potentially.
biff
go fake Hockey! emo-emo-tmbgtalk_woo.gif
Lord PichuPal
Arkansas managed to beat Indiana today and face North Carolina next Sunday. Technically it was an upset since the Hogs are a 9 seed to Indiana's 8 also, but who really cares, that match is always a see-saw one. I'm glad they did win, I picked them to win that game.
biff
i did too. emo-tmbgtalk_lol2.gif YaY Hogs!!!!! emo-emo-tmbgtalk_woo.gif

this is the first time they've won in the first round in a long long time. emo-tmbgtalk_nut.gif

i'll have to ask galoot cuz he keeps up with it & i kinda dozed off early last night, but with all the upsets i've been reading about this morning, my bracket is in shambles. emo-0tmbgtalk_roflmao.gif

i did pick the hogs though. i usually pick em all the way to the championship, but this year i decided to be a little more realistic. i think i have em getting picked off in the next round... emo-tmbgtalk_bigblush.gif
Lord PichuPal
I have them losing to North Carolina this round, too. No way in hell they'll be able to upset the Tar Heels, the game is in Raleigh. But at least they got through the first round. My bracket is dead in the West region since I chose Drake making the Final Four, and Western Kentucky stunned them to open the tournament. And many upsets I didn't account for happened, though I'm fine with seeing underdogs win.
biff
galoot sez i'm doing really good on my bracket. emo-tmbgtalk_bigblush.gif he was at cbs.com telling me how many 'experts' did worse on theirs. emo-tmbgtalk_yeah.gif

i have the Hogs winning today's game. emo-tmbgtalk_lol2.gif hey... stranger things have happened. emo-11zwinky.gif

like Nolan used to say... if you don't think you can win it, you shouldn't be in it. emo-tmbgtalk_naughty2.gif

we shall see...

i'm glad you just said they don't stand a chance. it worked the last time. emo-tmbgtalk_thumbup.gif
Lord PichuPal
This time I was proven right, North Carolina made bacon out of the Hogs and shot over 60% for the game. Was like 108-76 or something like that, so my bracket is still intact (at least in one neck of the woods).

As for the NRHL: Seattle knocked off Columbus 4-2 at the Superstar Stadium in Seattle to stay undefeated at 5-0 and extend the streak to 16 straight. Their next game is fierce rival Vancouver at home before they host Phoenix, who will have the vicious Ludwig Krueger II back for that game. The Cobras were meant to be one of their toughest tests in their quest for the record, and they handled them easily. The next Eastern powerhouse they face is Chicago which is also upcoming (April 16th). We'll just see if they can keep it rolling.
