I saw Amy Winehouse in about 2003 supporting someone else and she was COMPLETELY different to how she now, the songs were more Latin and she didn't dress the same or have that beehive hairdo. I prefer the songs now though, I remember thinking she was a bit dull at the time.

Linnell: Anyway, we decided to stick with the phone call from the dead despite the poor reception it got at TED. And that was a regular part of our show; we had different people calling. Some of the regulars were Eleanor Roosevelt who would call a lot and, of course, the great Jerry Orbach who had an incredibly long and interesting career. He was on Broadway for many years; he was in the longest running show of all time, The Fantasticks. He created one of the main roles for that show. So I don’t know, John and I were obsessed with Jerry Orbach for a while. There was also this crazy ad in the subway that said Jerry Orbach donated his eyes to science, to encourage people to be organ donors. And the thought of someone else walking around with Jerry Orbach’s eyeballs really delighted and freaked us out.

OPPENHEIMER
Take the Whole Midrange and Boost It

Bar/None is truly stoked for the release of Oppenheimer's second album, Take the Whole Midrange and Boost It. Alarm Press says that Oppenheimer "continues their disarming fascination with synthesizer fuzz and boisterous, bright pop. The album combines the admitted influences of Brian Eno, Kraftwerk, and My Bloody Valentine with the spirited harmonies and concise compositions of Brian Wilson." Twelve new songs including a guest appearance from Matt Caughtran from thrash punk god-heads The Bronx.

Available everywhere June 3, 2008. Place your preorder here.

Hey everybody!

Flansy here--writing to y'all direct from the TMBG tour bus! It's just day two of our tour, and I just got off stage in Bloomington. The bus is already filthy and the vibe is distinctly good. The Beachwood Ballroom in Cleveland was a terrifically fun gig to start the run. None of the insane electrical problems of our last gig there, but memorable none the less. Some of the nicest people you'll meet on the road working at that venue. Tonight we were in Bloomington performing at the Bluebird Nightclub for the first time. It was a steaming cauldron of rock. A very enthusiastic, sold out crowd. Had an amazing meal before the show analyzed by our resident foodies Brendan the tour manager and International Player Frank Vilardi, who has been doing a highly laudable job filling Papa Marty's rather enormous drumming shoes.

Tomorrow is Madison. We love Madison. Onward and rockward, y'all.

Matchbox Twenty Cancels Rodeo Concert

Apr 13, 5:25 AM (ET)

CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) - Matchbox Twenty has canceled a performance at a large rodeo event out of concern for the animals.

Lead singer Rob Thomas confirmed that the band is pulling out of its July 18 show at Cheyenne Frontier Days, which bills itself as the world's biggest outdoor rodeo.

"We ask that (fans) please understand that it would be impossible for us to put ourselves in the position of making money from what we believe to be the mistreatment of animals," according to a statement from Thomas posted Saturday on the band's Web site.

The Grammy-winning band is still scheduled to perform this summer at the North Dakota State Fair, which includes rodeo events.

New music video Web site features major label artists

Apr 17, 1:01 AM (ET)

By SOLVEJ SCHOU

LOS ANGELES (AP) - A company backed by investors including Will Smith and major record labels has launched a new Web site offering 10,000 free, high-definition music videos.

Universal Music Group announced Wednesday that it has joined EMI and Sony BMG in backing Santa Monica-based PluggedIn.

The Web site features music videos from artists such as Gwen Stefani, Green Day, Coldplay and Norah Jones and is powered by a new media player that supports full-screen high-definition video.

PluggedIn also announced a partnership with Smith's production and management company Overbrook Entertainment.

emo-tmbgtalk_yeah.gif Judging from the description of how the song is used in that movie, I'd be inclined to side with Yoko on this one.

me too. & i disagree that it's similar to the J.K. Rowling case. emo-tmbgtalk_nut.gif (other than the fact that they're both cases) emo-tmbgtalk_lol5.gif
thunderbird
As much as I'm on Yoko's side on this one I don't think she'll win. It says that only 15 to 20 sec. of the song were used which is considered fair use, though I don't know if the fair use laws apply in a commercial work. Also, I'm concerned that this will set a precedent that will make it legally difficult for filmmakers, particularly independent ones, to use small portions of songs in their works.
biff
emo-tmbgtalk_hmm.gif you make a good point.

still, i absolutely cannot stand Ben Stein. emo-0tmbgtalk_razzy.gif & really, it seems like you could pick on evolution without bringing John Lennon into it.. it's just a song. it's not like they teach "John Lennon's Imagine" to little kids in grade school.

i haven't seen the movie, but i think it's pretty weak to hang all the world's atheists around one dead guy's neck. he didn't invent evolution or atheism. he just wrote a song that can be interpreted any way the listener wants.

this will be an interesting one to watch... i hope the actual result makes the news.

Cash recording to be released with new documentary

Sep 24, 9:37 PM (ET)

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - An unreleased recitation by Johnny Cash will be available as part of a new documentary examining Cash's views on America. In "I Am The Nation," the deep-voiced singer personifies the country with references to important events and people in American history.

The recording was discovered in Cash's personal belongings after his death. It will be released as part of "Johnny Cash's America," a documentary airing Oct. 23 on the Biography Channel. The companion DVD/CD package on Legacy Recordings will be available Oct. 28.

The documentary features interviews with Bob Dylan; Al Gore; Snoop Dogg; Sheryl Crow; Steve Earle; Kris Kristofferson; Loretta Lynn; Merle Haggard; U.S. Sen. Lamar Alexander; Tim Robbins; Vince Gill; Cash; his sister, Joanne; and his children, John Carter Cash and Cindy Cash.

In the film, Cash, who was outspoken on social issues, discusses the political process and the two parties.

"The whole film and soundtrack are poignant for what's going on in the political climate right now," said Charlie Dougiello, a spokesman for the project.

"Endearingly ragged...destined for cult status...abetted with homemade-looking but sometimes lyrical effects.
"
- Andy Webster, New York Times

"A thrift-shop Solaris...realized through homegrown special effects that would please fans of Eraserhead-era David Lynch.
"
- Steve Dollar, New York Sun

"It's basically as weird as you'd hoped.
"
- Isaac Butler, New York Magazine

"this mostly black-and-white, dreamlike yuletide fable does possess its own dorky DIY charm, as space-suited men wander around narrow enclosures in various stages of dissociation, Santas commit airlock suicide, and a nurse/mother in a giant lightbulb births a bubble baby.
"
- Variety

"As far as Christmas movies go, this one is hard to beat.

Omaha, Nebraska: Film Streams / Ruth Sokolof Theater, October 31

Darn it. emo-tmbgtalk_lol2.gif (I have to go down to Omaha on the 16th -- Dad has a doctor's appointment there and he wants me to accompany him -- but a second trip down there would be too much for next month's budget. emo-tmbgtalk_ohwe.gif )

That Johnny Cash docu sounds cool. emo-tmbgtalk_thumbup.gif

so, i read an Oppenheimer blog yesterday & they said they were fixing to play their last Belfast show for a while, cuz they're about to head back into the studio to start recording again! emo-tmbgtalk_0000clap.gif

i loves me some Oppenheimer. emo-tmbgtalk_lol2.gif i can't go to Belfast, so i'd just as soon have em making a new album that i can actually hear. emo-tmbgtalk_yeah.gif
GRChereck
emo-emo-tmbgtalk_woo.gif Glad to hear they'll already be working on a new album! emo-thumbsup.gif

biff
i know! i was really surprised... but happy. emo-prplhappy.gif

MTV is stoopid... http://www.pcworld.com/article/153127/once...t_of_touch.html

& you can get a free song from The Boss right here... http://www.brucespringsteen.net/news/index.html man, his handwriting is even worse than my kids! emo-0tmbgtalk_roflmao.gif
GRChereck
MTV... emo-tmbgtalk_grumbles.gif That IS actually pretty funny. emo-tmbgtalk_lol2.gif

I'm checking out that Springsteen track now -- very bluesy... He kinda sounds like Tom Waits on it. emo-tmbgtalk_yeah.gif emo-tmbgtalk_thumbup.gif

biff
yeah, it didn't sound that much like Bruce to me. emo-tmbgtalk_lol2.gif i haven't bought any of his new albums in years though. maybe he always sounds like that now. emo-tmbgtalk_nut.gif
GRChereck
emo-tmbgtalk_hmm.gif Nah, he sounded considerably more rough-edged here. (On his last album, Magic, he actually sorta sounds like his old self, for the most part.)

biff
that's cool. emo-tmbgtalk_yeah.gif

i really need to check out some of his newer stuff...
GRChereck
Magic is probably my favorite of the newer ones -- I think it's his most consistently catchy batch of tunes since Born In The USA -- and We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions is a fun one. emo-prplhappy.gif

biff
emo-tmbgtalk_hmm.gif i'll have to go see what i can find at IMEEM. emo-tmbgtalk_thumbup.gif

an email i got from David Byrne...

Pardon the bulk mailing. I Can't Vote. I am an immigrant with a Green Card and, therefore, I am not eligible to vote in a federal election. FYI - I can get drafted (luckily, Daniel Berrigan burned my draft board's records) and I pay taxes, yet I cannot vote for President. On Election Day, I see my neighbors heading to the nearby elementary school to cast their ballots. The voting booth joint is a great leveler; the whole neighborhood - rich, poor, old, young, decrepit and spunky - they all turn out in one day.

But most of you can vote. What can I say? The Republicans have made us less safe than before 9/11, bankrupted this economy, started an illegal war they can't - and don't intend to - finish, removed what sympathy (after 9/11) and respect the world had for the US, and have robbed US citizens of many of their basic rights. Global warming? What's that? Science and education? Investment in our future? No, thanks - we'll stick with a good 'ole hockey mom. Ignorant, and fucking proud of it, as is always the case.

Although it looks like a shoo-in, it ain't over 'til Florida. And there are plenty of racists in this country who will vote against their own best interests. So please, get to your local elementary school, post office, town hall, or whatever, and cast your vote and make this a country we can all be proud of. We can get out of this mess, and life can be better than it is.

GRChereck
The Clash pix were awesome! emo-000lighter_4744.gif I especially liked the one with DeNiro. emo-tmbgtalk_thumbup.gif

That Joe's Garage show sounds good. emo-tmbgtalk_lol2.gif (But I doubt we'll ever get a touring company of it to come around this area!)

wtf? emo-tmbgtalk_nut.gif
GRChereck
emo-tmbgtalk_lol2.gif I was never a big fan of them, anyway (although I like a few of their songs, like "Today" and "1979"). emo-grinning-smiley-044.gif

biff
Noah liked em a lot when he was a kid. i don't know how he feels about em now. emo-tmbgtalk_dunno.gif

it doesn't surprise me much, cuz Billy Corgan was always kind of a d*ck. emo-tongue3.gif still, if you were a fan & went to one of these shows it would be such a disappointment. emo-050505tmbgtalk_ohwell050505.gif
Mister Bones
They were one of the first bands I was a fan of but I can barely stand them now.
biff
i like some of their songs, but i've never listened to a whole album. emo-tmbgtalk_dunno.gif
